Crafts from the past
I'm currently working on a project which focuses on hand tools and devices from previous generations.
Over the last few weeks I've spent a fair amount of time looking through various photography related sites. What I have come to find is that many of the so called top tier pros are at times not that much better than some unknowns. The pros often get the final product just right, while those with lesser skill may overlook the technical aspects. Either way it really does come down to what the viewer feels.
Bad pictures can make good art.
I often try to create images using only the natural light available. I generally don't use any flash or fill lights. Just the light that's there.
This can lead to challenging exposure issues but one has to get creative and selective as far as subject matter and location goes.
I encourage people to participate in the numerous photo contests offered by countless companies and organizations. Often these competitions offer very nice prizes to entice participants.
It's also the best way to gauge your skill and level of creativity. Often we take pictures which we feel may not meet the high skill level expected by armchair critics.
How do you know how good you are if you don't participate? These contests are often judged by peers with extensive knowledge and experience and insider connections.
You just might be the next Karsh?
